SBC Dinner Hop - Part 1 (Changi Village Hawker Center)

SBC organised a dinner hop on 28 August 2009. Decided to join as it give me a chance to experiment with my fren's DSLR ,as well as, maybe, discover some hidden food places that I may not know.

The itinerary was not released until the day itself. I was actually a little disappointed to see the places on the list are places that are actually very well-known for the food. Nevertheless, joining in the fun was the main aim and hence off we go to our 1st Stop - Changi Village.

The 1st stall that we attacked was Rong Ji. This stall is recommended by many programmes, example City Beat, Makansutra, etc. We ordered the Chicken Chop Hor Fun, Chicken Chop Noodle and Deep Fried Wanton to share. Personally I have tried the Chicken Chop Hor Fun before and feels that it still taste as good. The wanton though, was a little forgettable as I think it has been fried and left there for a while in preparation for the dinner crowd and hence it is not hot and crispy as i have expected it to be.

Chicken Chop Hor Fun - $3.50

Deep Fried Wanton - $3

Sting ray from one of the BBQ stall - $10

One of my cols recommended the Red Tea Logan Jelly from Mei Lin Yin xx. The stall has a green signboard and is along the same row as the Famous Nasi Lemak Stall so you cannot miss it. I have been to Changi Village for a few times but have not heard of this dessert. He told me that it is highly recommended by his army friends who must have it before they book into camp. All 5 of us cant wait to dig in to this "highly recommended" dessert and it was indeed yummy! You can smell the fragrance of the jelly and it was so smooth it slides down your throat. Yummy.. i'm craving for it as i write this..

Cheese Pai Gu with KaiLan

Decided to start logging what are the nice food that I ate during lunch.

This is from a zhi char stall at a coffee shop at Tanjong Pagar Complex. I personally like the food quality of this small zhi char stall relative to the bigger ones in the neighbouring coffee shops as the ingredients are fresher and the service much better although you may have to wait for ages at times during lunch for your food to come..

Pricing is resonable. It cost $4 and you get 4 decent pieces of meaty pork meat with cheese & fries and a big bowl of rice. We added $1 for extra veg to make the meal more complete. Portion is considered big for ladies though.

Gindaco Takoyaki @ Ion Orchard

Finally got to eat the Takoyaki from Gindaco!!
Still remembered the 1st time i ate it when i made my 1st trip to HK in 2005. Was so hungry then and it so happened that we got lost and chanced upon the stall. .The taste was just SOooo unforgettable.. and the ice green tea too.. Had me craving for more when i came back to SG but just cannot find any that resembles it.

Of course I was thrilled when I knew that they have opened an outlet at Ion in Orchard in SG.. been wanting to go but was too busy with work until finally, decided to get my gf to go there and try it and at the same time, catch up and "celebrate my bday" :)

Think this should be a Japanese Guy preparing the takoyaki. I didn't realise so much oil was used to make the outside layer so cripsy! Sinful sinful...

Finally got our order, nicely glazed with bbq sauce, mayonnaise and bonito flakes. We bought the set for 2 pax, 6 pieces and 2 drinks for $7.20. I think that is quite a decent price to pay for the food quality. If you are super hungry, you can go for 10 pieces and 2 drinks which cost only $9.90.  There is also a set available for one person, 6 pieces and 1 drink, that cost $6.

Look at the inside of the takoyaki. The outside was crispy and the inside, soft and tasty. Look at the big chunk of octopus. I'm not a big fan of octopus but really like this one as it was quite well prepared. Could not get the details of the takoyaki with my camera phone.. plus i was too eager to pop it into my mouth than to take photos.. hence the ugly photo here.. lol...

The ice green tea that came with the set was a disappointment though. It was those ready made ones with instant powder that was quite sweet. Very different from the ones I had in HK where they actually had to blend the green tea powder with water and you are allowed to adjust the sugar content on your own based on your preference. Not too sure if they still do it that way now as that is a little more labour intensive. Will have to wait for me to make a trip to HK to find out ;P
